The KFF, formerly the Kaiser Family Foundation, released a new poll today that highlights the unrelenting problem of addiction in the United States.
Among the findings:
- Two-thirds of the adults in the U.S. say “either they or a family member have been addicted to alcohol or drugs, experienced homelessness due to addiction, or experienced a drug overdose leading to an emergency room visit, hospitalization, or death.”
- Twenty-nine percent of U.S. adults say “they or someone in their family have ever been addicted to opioids, including prescription painkillers and illegal opioids like heroin.”
- And, among the respondents who said they or a family member experienced addiction to prescription painkillers, alcohol, or any illegal drug, only 46 percent said they or their family member got treatment for the addiction.
The complete Kaiser report was released today, Aug. 15, 2023, and based on responses from July, 2023.
